About Us

What Is Our Faith Story?

The United Church of Christ is a blend of four faith traditions:

Congregational,
Christian,
Evangelical,

and
Reformed.

What Unifies Us in Our Faith?

The United Church of Christ (UCC),
as a faithful and faith-filled Body of Christ,
affirms the role of covenant
in its mission, communications and governance.

The UCC understands and explains itself in three tiers:

       1.  Individual UCC members are in covenant with God.
       2.  Individual UCC members are in covenant with one another.
       3.  The UCC, as a Body of Christ, is in covenant with God.

A contrast/comparison between “contract” and “covenant”
clarifies and qualifies the nature of covenant.

A contract is based on law and fortified with fear.
A covenant is based on grace and fortified with love.

A contract defines, limits and restricts action and behavior.
A covenant defines, invites and empowers action and behavior.

Accountability under a contract is generally one-sided.
Accountability under a covenant is mutual and collaborative.

A contract is enforceable on its own standing
A covenant requires affirmation and re-affirmation to be effectual.

One scriptural covenant reads:
“...you will be my people, and I will be your God” (Ezekiel 36:28)
God invites—not coerces—people to be in covenant
with God and with one another.
Invitation—not coercion—shapes a covenantal relationship.

Faith Formation

May you consider these basic premises and principles within the United Church of Christ:

GOD:  God is a loving God who created humankind in God’s image. Therefore, all humans are valued and cherished by God.

JESUS:  Through Jesus, the spiritual Head of the Church, God overcomes sin and reconciles the world with Divine Love. We trust God. We follow the teachings of Jesus.

HOLY SPIRIT:  The Holy Spirit is God’s continuing power and enduring presence in the world.

TRINITY:  Creator God, Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit are divinely one.

CHURCH:  The church is a community of people, who are united by the love of God, the grace of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to share together in worship, work and witness.

HOLY SCRIPTURE/THE BIBLE:  Our community of faith studies Scripture critically and considers Scripture seriously, but does not interpret Scripture literally.

SERVICE TO OTHERS: Significant missions of the Church are to seek justice and to share God's abundant life and unconditional love throughout our broken world.

SACRAMENTS:  Our community of faith recognizes and celebrates two sacraments:  Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Through Baptism, persons (infants, children, adolescents and adults) are welcomed into the faith community with grace and join the universal fellowship of the Church. In the Lord's Supper, the breaking of Bread and the sharing of the Cup are done in remembrance of Christ’s life, death and resurrection.
